Legacy Waste Management in Nagar Palika Parishad Rajgarh:
Nagar Palika Parishad in Rajgarh District faced a significant challenge with the Rajgarh Dumpsite, a legacy waste dump posing environmental and public health risks. With a population of 29,726 (as per the Census 2011) and waste generation reaching 11.11 TPD in 2022, addressing this issue was imperative. The dumpsite, located at coordinates 23°59’16.35″N 76°43’35.19″ E, covered an area of 38600 sqm, with 12449 sqm designated as waste spread area. The estimated capacity for dumpsite reclamation was 12,757 MT of legacy waste.
The FWMC took charge of the remediation project to tackle this environmental concern. Recognizing the significance of sustainable practices, FWMC employed a multifaceted approach, integrating bioremediation, biomining, and proper disposal of residual waste. Bioremediation involves the use of microorganisms to break down pollutants in the waste, while biomining focuses on extracting valuable materials from the legacy waste.
FWMC meticulously executed the project, working towards the restoration of the dumpsite and mitigating environmental hazards. The comprehensive strategy ensured that the legacy waste was processed efficiently, contributing to the rejuvenation of the site. The successful collaboration with the Nagar Palika Parishad and community engagement initiatives showcased the commitment of FWMC to sustainable waste management practices. The project not only aimed at reclaiming the dumpsite but also underscored the importance of responsible waste disposal and environmental conservation in the broader context of the community’s well-being.
Mahidpur that was functional until 2015, garbage had been dumped to reach a height of over two metres, and this again has been capped and converted into a botanical garden and wetland. Nagda is no different from most other cities of India in its neglect of the garbage generated in the city. Heaps of garbage were poorly collected and carelessly transported from transfer stations in uncovered trucks to dumpsites, which could be described as land-hills. As the city expanded over the years, the dumpsites got closer and closer to town and became a major public health hazard.
